Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) developed by Dr. Aaron Beck, CBT treats affective problems including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) through cognitive restructuring or reframing, exposure (ERP), and behavioural activation.
CBT first identifies how a client’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviours work together. Second, it focuses on how the client’s thoughts, emotions, body sensations and behavioural reactions are generally directed by the client’s core belief system, specifically the impact of negative core beliefs, and distorted thinking patterns.
CBT delivery, in its true protocol, is a structured, time-limited, top-down, problem-focused treatment that is an excellent building block in many other treatments such as the foundation in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT).
